At BISC we teach according to the Renewed Framework
for Mathematics which addresses the British National
Curriculum in light of Ofsted’s view that pupils
need maths tasks which match exactly to the level of
their individual understanding. We encourage
mathematical talk and problem solving through our
scheme of work, whilst developing a strong
underlying understanding of number, shape and the
presentation and interpretation of data and
measures.
Children are taught in small groups, individually
and as part of the whole class. They develop their
understanding using a variety of practical equipment
as well as calculators and computers. BISC utilises
interactive white boards extensively in the teaching
of mathematics and subscribes to Mathletics, an
online program which supports our curriculum and can
be accessed by children and parents at home and at
school. |
Mathematics skills are also employed and developed in other
subjects. For example, there is the use of measuring
equipment in Science, map skills in Geography, shape and
Geometry in Art, and the concept of time in History.
Furthermore children enjoy a
fun packed ‘Maths Week’ during the academic year, they
compete on a friendly basis with other British Schools in
Cairo during a CIBSA mathematics event, and more formally on
an international level through the European Council of
International Schools mathematics challenge.
Whilst
children are
continuously
assessed through teacher observations we also provide the
children with half termly written assessments. These allow
us to track each child’s individual progress using National
Curriculum Levels, and help to highlight strengths and
weaknesses. In Year 6 children take part in the British
National Curriculum Tests for KS2 which are then reported
formally to our Board of Governors and to parents. |
