PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH and
CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION (PSHCE)
PSHCE encompasses many areas and topics which are
designed to help children engage in full and active lives as members of
society.
PSHE is designed to encourage children to consider both
their local environment and the world at large.
Each half term they think about and
discuss issues which affect themselves and others, both now and in the
future. It helps them to consider the consequences of their actions and
to come to responsible decisions about sometimes difficult issues.
These can be as large as discussing world pollution,
right down to more personalised problems such as keeping the classroom
tidy.
PSHCE also provides a forum for children to think
about keeping both healthy and safe during their lifetimes.
In the Junior School, PSHCE is taught both
implicitly and explicitly and can be linked to other subjects where
appropriate.
A variety of opportunities is also provided for the
students to take part in PSHCE-related activities on a practical basis.
For example, School Council, which is made up of
representatives from the Key Stage One and Key Stage Two classes, meets
to discuss issues affecting the Junior School. They look at how they
can help others in the school and wider community and improve the school
environment. The representatives bring back ideas from their class to
meetings.
Some of the things they will be
looking at are how we can help those less well off than themselves,
recycling and the importance of water to name but a few!
PSHE also places great emphasis on building
children’s confidence and self-esteem, whilst also considering the
feelings and points of view of others.
After all some of the best learning takes place when
these areas are successfully addressed!
